MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to action Sunday afternoon, when it travels to Eastern Illinois for a 1 p.m. (CT) swim versus the Panthers at Padovan Pool.
Ball State enters the contest with a 1-0 overall record after topping Evansville in its only home dual meet of the season Oct. 8. The following morning, the Cardinals secured a 204-154 victory over Evansville in the Ball State Relay Invitational, which was a non-traditional meet comprised of all relay events.
Eastern Illinois enters the meet with a 1-0 record after posting a 127-78 victory at IUPUI Thursday night.
In Sunday's meet versus EIU, Ball State head coach Bob Thomas will be looking to guide the Cardinals past his alma mater for the fifth straight season. Last year, Ball State tallied a 169.5-112.5 win over Eastern Illinois at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
During the summer of 2002, Thomas' Eastern Illinois bestowed its highest athletic honor on him, when he was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame, making him one of just three swimmers in the school's history to receive such recognition. In his swimming career at Eastern Illinois, Thomas won 14 national championships -- seven NAIA national titles in 1971 and 1972 and seven NCAA Division II titles in 1973 and 1974.
In its first meet of the season, the Cardinals tallied victories in 10 of the 16 events, with four different swimmers collecting a pair of individual victories and a relay win versus Evansville.
Sophomore Michael Weber (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic H.S.) tallied first-place efforts in the 100 backstroke (55.34) and the 200 individual medley (2:00.21). Junior Gavin McNeeley (North Manchester, Ind./Manchester H.S.) swept the breaststroke events, with a time of 59.95 in the 100 and 2:13.76 in the 200.
Sophomore Chris Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike H.S.) continued his dominance in the butterfly, posing a pair of wins with clockings of 51.01 in the 100 and 1:57.83 in the 200. Junior Casey Schroeder (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial H.S.) went on to sweep the sprint freestyle events, touching the wall in 21.58 in the 50 and 48.30 in the 100.
The four also combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.10. Posting Ball State's final event win was senior Mark Golden (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park H.S.), whose time of 10:16.26 in the 1,000 freestyle edged out Evansville's Carder Labrake by .16 of a second in the meets' longest event.
