MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State travels to play Missouri State Friday in Springfield, Mo. at 1 p.m., before returning to the BSU Turf Field Sunday to host Indiana in a non-conference contest scheduled for 1 p.m.
FROM THE WEEKEND: Ball State fell to MAC foe Ohio, 3-1, on Friday at the BSU Turf Field. The Bobcats outshot the Cardinals, 22-10, however the Ball State defense shined, combining for 17 saves on the day. Junior midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) scored her 13th goal of the season off a penalty corner and junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) recorded the Cardinals' lone assist during the contest. Kuhn tallied seven shots, while Lulow, junior forward CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) and junior midfielder Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) tallied one each. Lulow also recorded one defensive save, while senior forward Maura Sawicki (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) finished the contest with a game-high four defensive saves.
Sunday afternoon, Ball State fell to Kent State, 7-4, at the BSU Turf Field. The Bobcats outshot the Cardinals, 28-11, and recorded a 15-5 advantage on penalty corners. Hermes scored her second goal of the season off a penalty corner, while Kuhn capitalized twice on five shots. Lulow and Sawicki each tallied an assist, two shots and two defensive saves while junior defender Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) finished the day with one defensive save. Junior forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) also tallied an assist during the contest, while junior forward Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) recorded one shot. Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) recorded a game-high 10 saves in the cage for a total of 22 saves on the weekend.
SCOUTING MISSOURI STATE: Friday's game marks the 20th time Ball State and Missouri State have met, as the Cardinals own a 14-5 all-time record against the Bears. Earlier in the season, the Cardinals defeated the Bears, 2-1, in overtime. Missouri State enters weekend play with a 4-11 record (1-5 MAC) after falling to Central Michigan, 1-9, on Saturday and defeating the Chippewas, 1-0, on Sunday. Junior forward Casey Bayliss, a native of Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, leads Missouri State's charge with 19 points so far in the season. Bayliss and the Bears close out the final four games of their schedule at home at the Plaster Sports Complex.
SCOUTING INDIANA: Friday's game marks the 19th time Ball State and Indiana have met, as the Hoosiers own a 15-3 all-time record against the Cardinals. The two squads last met during the 2009 season as Indiana defeated Ball State, 2-1, in Bloomington, Ind. Ball State trailed 25-9 in shots and Brooke MacGillivary scored the lone Cardinal goal at 43:02 mark. The Hoosiers enter weekend play with a 9-5 record (1-3 Big 10) after defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes, 2-1, in overtime, and the Villanova Wildcats, 2-1. Indiana also has a contest with No. 9 Michigan State on Saturday before heading to Muncie, Ind. Brenna Moeljadi, Morgan Fleetwood, Kelsey Kiper and Shareyna Chang lead the Hoosier's charge, combining for 47 points as a group on season so far. The group has accumulated nearly two-thirds of Indiana's goals since the beginning of the year (16-of-26). The Hoosiers earned three votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
BALL STATE'S DOMINATING DEFENSE: For her performance during last weekend's contests against Ohio and Kent State, Sawicki has been named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after combining for six defensive saves and an assist on the weekend. With her team-leading nine defensive saves so far this season, the elementary education major leads all active BSU players with 11 career defensive saves. Sawicki has accounted for half of the Cardinals defensive saves so far this season (9-of-18) and ranks first in the NCAA in defensive saves. Also, against Ohio, Mitchell tallied a game-high 12 saves, the highest single-game total among all active BSU goalkeepers.
KUHN'S CAREER TRACKER: With 15 goals, Kuhn has doubled her total of goals scored during both the 2008-09 seasons (7). Also, with her team-leading 15 goals so far this season, the communication studies major leads all active BSU scorers with 22 career goals and her 52 career points stand as the most among active BSU players. Kuhn stands two goals shy of breaking Chantelle Isaac's record of 23 goals (2003-05) and 15 goals short of breaking Lindsay Quay's career record of 37 goals (2003-06).
