Field Hockey Falls to Kent State, 7-4

"Today was tough," head coach Beth Maddox said. "When we play together we are awesome. Unfortunately, we did not play as a team for the entire 70 minutes today."
Kent State scored two goals within the opening ten minutes of the first period, as Debbie Bell scored on a penalty corner and Rachel Miller netted an unassisted goal less than three minutes later.
Ball State junior forward CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) put the Cardinals on the board at 14:14 mark on a penalty corner, her second goal of the season. Senior forward Maura Sawicki (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) provided the assist.
It was not until the 44:48 mark in the second period when Kuhn netted the equalizer for the Cardinals on a corner. Junior midfielder Gretchen Lulow (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) provided the assist.
At 52:40 mark, Carla Johl started a 4-0 run for the Golden Flashes until Kuhn scored her second goal of the game at 66:57 mark from five yards out. Junior forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) provided the assist on Kuhn's 15th goal of the season.
Kuhn, a communication studies major, completed the contest with five shots, while Lulow and Sawicki each tallied two. Lulow, an exercise science major, and Sawicki, an elementary education major, also recorded two defensive saves each during the game, while Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) finished the day with one. Junior forward Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) also finished the contest with one shot.
Ball State junior goalkeeper Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) recorded a game-high 10 saves in the cage for a total of 22 saves on the weekend, while Kent State's Caroline Suitch tallied five during 70 minutes of action.
Ball State travels to play Missouri State Friday in Springfield, Mo. at 1 p.m., before returning to the BSU Turf Field Sunday to host Indiana in a contest scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday's game marks the 20th time Ball State and Missouri State have met, as the Cardinals own a 14-5 all-time record against Bears. The contest versus Indiana Sunday marks the 19th meeting between the two teams.
