Men's Golf Defeats Nationally Ranked Opponents

Ball State's men's golf team finished 12th out of 17 teams, and defeated two nationally ranked squads at the Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational at ASU's Kampen Golf Course.
The Cardinals tallied a 289-292-289=870 to finish ahead of 36th-ranked California and 39th-rated New Mexico. Ball State was two strokes away from a top-10 finish in a field which featured nine of the nation's top 40 teams. Arizona State won the event with an 838.
Senior Andrew Rhodes led Ball State with a 70-73-73=216 to tie for 25th in the field.
Brian Maurer tied for 39th with a 73-74-71=218, while Ross Cosat tied for 53rd with a 73-76-71=220.
Eric Steger managed a 78-69-75=222, despite battling the flu throughout the tournament and tied for 67th overall. Anthony Novak tallied a 73-77-74=224 to tie for 77th in the tournament.
The Cardinals are idle next week and will compete at the Michigan State Fossum Invitational April 25-26. Ball State is hosting the 2009 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships at the Brickyard Crossing in Speedway, Ind., April 30-May 2.
