Jones And Lampley Named All-MAC Honorable Mention
March 09, 2009 | Men's Basketball
Jones is the only freshman in the MAC to be named to the team this season. He leads the Cardinals in scoring at 11.0 points per game and in rebounding at 7.4 boards per game. He is the first freshman to the named to an All-MAC team since the 2005 season when Leon Williams of Ohio earned All-MAC honors. Additionally, he is only the second Ball State freshman all-time to earn All-MAC accolades as a freshman and the first since 1980 when Ray McCallum was named All-MAC Second Team.
“Jarrod had an outstanding regular season for our team,” head coach Billy Taylor said. “This is a tremendous individual honor for him because very rarely does a freshman make the all-conference team. I believe this recognition speaks to the impact he has made on our program and the positive success of this season.”
Jones has reached double figures in scoring 17 times this season while posting three double-doubles. He has led the team in scoring 12 times this year and the Cardinals are 9-3 in those games. He opened his career in brilliant fashion with a 21-point, 12-rebound effort in the season opener. He also was named the MAC West Player of the Week after averaging 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds against Bowling Green and Ohio.
“Offensively, Jarrod has been able to score in a variety of ways,” Taylor said. “While he has seen double teams and a variety of defenses, he has been able to consistently produce results for us. On the defensive end of the floor, he has been a presence for us in the paint and has proven to be a very good rebounder. We are all excited about his future with our program.”
Lampley, one of the team's captains, turned in an All-Conference performance this season has he led the Cardinals to the MAC West Division championship. He was second on the team in scoring at 10.3 points per game and led the Cardinals in assists with 78. He leads the team in court time at 31.1 minutes per game in his first full season as a starter.
“I have been fortunate to coach Brandon for the last two seasons and has been a vital part of our program,” Taylor said. “As a senior captain, he took a strong leadership role on our team in helping the development of so many new players to our program.”
Lampley has scored in double figures 17 times this season, including 13 out of the last 15 games to end the regular season. He leads the MAC in three-point shooting at 44.7 percent (34-of-76) this year. He has picked up his play in conference action as he is averaging a team-high 12.1 points per game against MAC foes and is shooting 53.5 percent (23-of-43) from long range in conference action.
“Brandon's on-court play has been very good and consistent for us,” Taylor said. “Offensively, he does so much for our team and defensively he has really emerged as a strong perimeter defender. He usually draws a difficult assignment from the opposition and is relentless in his pursuit and position defense. I am very proud of Brandon and our team shares joy over this recognition.”
The Cardinals enter the 2009 MAC Tournament as the number two seed and receive a bye in the first round. Ball State opens play in the quarterfinals against the winner of #7 Central Michigan/#10 Eastern Michigan. Game time is set for 12 p.m. at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
