CLEARWATER, Fla. ? The Ball State softball team closed South Florida's Under Armour Invitational with a win over Robert Morris 4-2.
Robert Morris chipped away at the Cardinals by scoring one run in each of the first two innings.
Alyssa Collins notched the first hit for the Ball State for the second game in a row. However, she was caught stealing second.
Tiffany Garofano pitched one and two thirds innings, striking out two batters. She was replaced by Elizabeth Milian in the second inning. During that time, Milian gave up no runs and one hit while striking out three batters.
Ball State's defense stopped the Colonials for the next four innings and rallied with their own scoring efforts.
Milian hit a ground rule double in the fifth inning after the ball bounced off the top of the fence. Her hit sparked the next inning at bat for Ball State.
All scoring was done in the sixth inning as Lisa Rozanski and Allie Pennock each singled to begin the inning. Alicia Barkley doubled up the middle, advancing Rozanski home to tie the score 1-1. Alyssa Collins was intentionally walked, with no outs, loading the bases. Amanda Montalto, who pinch hit, doubled to left field driving in Collins and Barkley. A passed ball would allow Milian to score the fourth run, putting the Cardinals permanently ahead.
Robert Morris could not catch up in the top of the seventh inning, giving Ball State the 4-2 win with seven hits.
With an overall record of 4-8, the Cardinals play two mid-week games. They face Kennesaw State 1p.m. followed by Central Florida at 3 p.m. Ball State then matches up with Boston noon Wednesday.
