March 10, 2009 | Softball
ORLANDO, Fla. ? The Ball State softball team split Tuesday losing 1-0 to Kennesaw State and winning 1-0 over Central Florida.
GAME ONE
In the teams' first meeting, Kennesaw State (10-11) logged only two hits in the game to Ball State's six. However, a hit off a throwing error in the fourth inning was enough to score the winning run for the Owls.
First to bat, Lisa Rozanski opened the game with a triple over the right fielder's head, the first in her career. Allie Pennock also singled off a bunt later in the game. Both Rozanski and Pennock are currently batting over .400.
Alyssa Collins earned two hits for the Cardinals, continuing an 11 game hitting streak. Kamilah Holle and Elizabeth Milian also recorded a pair of hits for Ball State.
On the mound, Milian (3-6) struck out five batters in the game for a season 2.11 ERA with 47 total strikeouts.
Kristy Stratton also saw action at third base for the first time this season and notched her first career assist on a ground ball.
The Cardinals missed eight scoring opportunities leaving runners on base, including bases loaded in the fifth inning. Ball State also tripled in hitting over Kennesaw State 6-2.
GAME TWO
During the last meeting, Central Florida dominated Ball State 4-1 in 2006. This time things would be different for the Cardinals.
Both defenses held strong throughout six innings as both teams remained scoreless. Rozanski made a diving catch for the first out in the bottom of the fourth. Laura Masch also made a quick reaction to a line drive back to her on the mound.
However, with one out in the top of the seventh, Jen Reifschneider knocked the ball down the right field line for a double, scoring Alicia Barkley for a 1-0 lead. Reifschneider currently leads the team with a .515 slugging percentage. Barkley also stole one base in the match.
The Knights would be unable to produce a run in the last inning giving Masch her second win of the season for a perfect 2-0 record. She struck out two batters and did not allow any runs in the game.
Ball State improves to 5-9 and is currently on game eight of its 13 game stretch in Florida. The Cardinals are slated to play Boston University noon Wednesday to begin the Under Armour Showcase at Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
