CLEARWATER, Fla. ? The Ball State softball team suffered a loss to Illinois-Chicago Saturday 2-0 for the second day of South Florida's Under Armour Invitational. The Cardinals followed with an impressive win over Lehigh the same day 5-1.
Game One
Against Illinois-Chicago (3-13), there were no marks on the scoreboard throughout three innings. Alyssa Collins logged a single to left field in the fourth inning as Ball State attacked first. However, that would be the only Ball State hit of the game. Four Cardinals reached base off walks. Collins' single continues her eight-game hitting streak.
Illinois-Chicago answered with two singles and a double to drive in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The inning ended with a pop up to Kamilah Holle at second base.
A double play by the Cardinals in the sixth inning posed to turn the game around, but it was the Flames' defense that earned the 2-0 victory.
Elizabeth Milian pitched her sixth complete game this season, striking out four batters. Her record stands at 2-5.
Game Two
The Cardinals improved to 3-8 after defeating Lehigh for the Cardinal's second game of the day. Lehigh previously beat South Florida 2-0.
Pitcher Laura Masch earned her first win as she tallied eight strikeouts in six innings, including the first batter of the game. The inning ended with two flies out to Lisa Rozanski in center field.
Rozanski then reached first on a single up the right side and stole second. Allie Pennock's sacrifice advanced Rozanski to third. Alicia Barkley then beat out a bunt, which also drove in Rozanski to score the teams first run.
After allowing the Mountain Hawks two hits in the second inning, Rozanski made a diving catch for the first out in the third. However, Lehigh found themselves on the board with a single to left field for the tying run.
Holle doubled to left field at the start of the fifth inning. After Rozanski reached on a fielder's choice, Holle advanced to third. Pennock then singled through the left side, scoring Holle. The Cardinals did not look back as Pennock, Rozanski and Barkley scored the next three runs.
Barkley went 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Allie Pennock, who went 2-for-2, earned her eighth stolen base this season. Ball State totaled eight hits.
