MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State men's swimming & diving junior Ben Battjes (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial H.S.) has been named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team after last weekend's 2009 Sun Belt/MAC Championships, as announced Tuesday by the league office.
“This is a tremendous honor for Ben,” said co-head coach Bob Thomas. “He put a lot of time and effort into his training this season and earned a well-deserved top eight finish in the 50 freestyle at the league championships. I am very proud of the effort he has shown throughout the season.”
Battjes was Ball State's top individual scorer at the league championships, posting an eighth-place effort in the 50 freestyle finals (20.76) and a 22nd-place showing in the 100 freestyle finals (45.99).
In prelims, Battjes tallied BSU's fastest 100 freestyle clocking of the year with a personal-best time of 45.85, while his 50 free prelim time of 20.56 was also a personal-best effort.
Battjes also tallied a career-fast time of 1:01.10 in the 100 breaststroke at the meet.
In addition to his individual efforts, Battjes swam the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay which placed ninth with a time of 3:03.95.
Battjes is the first Ball State men's swimmer to earn All-MAC honors since the 2006-07 season when then sophomore Kyle Hembree earned second team accolades.
