Field Hockey's Blaum Earns Player Of The Week Honors
October 07, 2009 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State junior defender Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Prep.) has been named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by league officials Tuesday for the first time in her career.
With the Cardinals leading 4-3 in the final seconds against Missouri State, Blaum made a defensive save on a last-chance penalty corner opportunity that prevented the Bears from tying the score and sending the game into overtime. Her awareness in the backfield helped Ball State earn its first conference victory this season. Blaum has posted two of the team's five total defensive saves.
Ball State improved to 1-3 in MAC play in the come-from-behind win against Missouri State, scoring four unanswered goals in the second period. Despite a 1-1 weekend record, four Cardinals recorded a goal, including Kaitlan Mitchell who scored twice. The team holds a 3-8 record overall heading into this weekend's matchup with Ohio and Kent State.
