MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State women's golf team claimed the team title at the 2008 Cardinal Classic at The Players Club after shooting an 18-hole school record 292 Tuesday afternoon to finish with a two-day score of 594. The Cardinals' score of 594 also sets a program record for a 36-hole event and gave BSU a seven-shot victory over second place Akron (601).
Grand Valley State finished third with a score of 607 while Northern Arizona (611) and Indiana State (613) rounded out the top five schools. California (Pa.) (614), Ohio (626), Eastern Kentucky (627), Oakland (633), Northern Illinois (633), Bowling Green (636), IUPUI (637) and Cleveland State (649) rounds out the 13-team field.
The Cardinals secured the title with strong play on day two as all five Cardinals shot at least a 78 with the top four scores ending between 75 and 72. Freshman K.C. Cain (Marion, Ind./Marion) once again paced the Cardinals as she turned in an even par round of 72 to finish with a two-day total of one-over 145. Cain finished in third place overall in the Cardinal Classic, just one shot out of the lead.
Akron's Kristen Hill and California's (Pa.) Simone DeSouza each finished the tournament with a score of 144. Hill claimed the tournament individual title after winning the first hole of the playoff. She also turned in the top score of the two-day event after shooting a two-under 70 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Brittany Kelly (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and junior Kirsty O'Connor (Burnley, Lancashire, U.K./Habergham) both finished the tournament tied for fourth with a score of 148. Kelly turned in an even par 72 on day two while O'Connor added a 73.
Sophomore Rachel Pruett (Linton, Ind./Linton-Stockton) was the fourth Cardinal to place in the top-15 as she finished tied for 14th with a score of 153. She posted a second day total of 75 to help the Cardinals to the title. Senior Sarah Windlan (Anderson, Ind./Highland) added a score of 158 to finish tied for 37th.
Ball State had two players play as individuals in the tournament with junior Paige Esford (Kingston, Ontario/St. Lawrence College) and freshman Katie Windlan (Anderson, Ind./Highland) both finishing tied for 30th with a score of 157.
Ball State returns to action next week when it travels to Fairlawn, Ohio to take part in the 54-hold Zippy Invitational at the Rosemont Country Club Sept. 29-30.
