The Ball State University women's golf team won the Tina Barrett Invitational in Farmville, Va. The Cardinals managed a team score of 308-314=622 to win the event by five strokes over host Longwood and six strokes over third-place James Madison.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but bad weather forced teams off the course after approximately five holes in the second round Monday. The tournament was reduced to a 36-hole event and was completed Tuesday.
Brittany Kelly led Ball State and won the event with a 74-78=152. Kelly tied for first after two 18-hole rounds and then won on the first playoff hole to register the victory over the 81-person field. She defeated Kelly Lynch of James Madison in the playoff.
Kirsty O'Connor tallied a 76-78 and finished third, while Paige Esford managed a 77-79 at the event and tied for seventh. Sarah Windlan tied for 25th with an 84-79=163, and Amy Roberts tied for 27th with an 81-83=164. Rachel Pruett competed as an individual and shot an 82-89 to finish in 37th place.
This marked Ball State's third tournament victory of the season and the second straight for the Cardinals. Ball State won the Tri-State Thunder Golf Invitational in their fall season opener Aug. 26, and then won the Butler Spring Invitational March 24-25. The Cardinals will return to action Monday and Tuesday at the Indiana Invitational at Crooked Stick Country Club in Indianapolis.
