Cardinals Defeat Akron 9-1

MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State softball team beat the Akron Zips 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Ball State took a commanding lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring five runs off three hits.

Abby Gross hit a two RBI single down the left field line to get things started for the Cardinals. Elizabeth Milian added a three-run home run to left center field.

Milian returned to the plate to deliver a triple in the third inning. A base hit by Kathryn Wilczynski sent Milian home increasing the BSU lead to 6-0.

Akron got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning as Deanna McCauley scored after reaching base off a double.

Ball State ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight run rule. Wilczynski hit an RBI single to right field that allowed Amanda Pick to score, and sent Cassi Olp to third.

Wilczynski went on to steal second base with Brittney Jones at bat. Jones sealed the victory with a single to right field that allowed both base runners to score, giving the Cardinals the 9-1 victory.

Tiffany Garofano was on the mound for BSU. Garofano picked up her sixth win of the season and struck out four Akron batters.

Ball State will travel to Notre Dame on Tuesday to take on the Fighting Irish at 4:00 p.m.
