CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Ball State softball team started the USF Under Armour Tournament with a 1-0 record after defeating the Blackbirds.
The Cardinals were scheduled to face George Mason at 6:00 p.m. but heavy rain caused the game to be postponed.
BSU scored the only run of the game in the second inning. Amanda Pick reached first on a walk, and Elizabeth Milian hit a single to left field to move Pick to second. Kathryn Wilczynski was walked to load the bases
Kamilah Holle fouled off multiple pitches with a full count and was eventually walked by Blaire Porter allowing Pick to score. Porter did not issue another walk the rest of the game and finished with 10 strikeouts.
The Blackbirds threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Brynn Lewis blasted a double to the fence in left field with a runner on first and one out.
Brittany Jones grabbed the ball and threw it to Wilczynski as LIU's Ayzsha Ervin rounded third base and ran home. Wilczynski's throw was on target and Abby Gross tagged the runner out to end the game.
The Cardinals are now 14-11 on the season including a 7-3 record since arriving in Florida.
