Men?s Basketball Places Three On All-MAC Teams
March 12, 2008 | Men's Basketball
CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Three members of the 2007-08 Ball State men's basketball team have earned recognition on All-Mid-American Conference squads, as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.
Both senior Peyton Stovall (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) and junior Anthony Newell (Chicago, Ill./Simeon H.S.) were named to the All-MAC Honorable Mention squad, while Melvin Goins (Dallas, Texas/Christian Life H.S.) was placed on the MAC All-Freshman Team.
Stovall enters the 2008 FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Tournament ranked 10th in program history with 1,370 career points. One of only two BSU players to start every game this season, Stovall leads the team in points scored (391) and rebounds (176). He also ranks 11th in the league in scoring (13.5) and 13th in rebounds (6.1). In MAC-only contests, Stovall is 17th in scoring (12.3) and rebounding (5.6).
Newell enters Wednesday's MAC Tournament contest versus Eastern Michigan ranked second on the team in points (338) and third in rebounds (162), despite missing nine games due to injury. If Newell had been healthy all season, both his scoring average (16.9) and rebounding average (8.1) would rank second in the league. Newell has played in all 16 conference games for the Cardinals, averaging 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, to rank second and third in the league, respectively.
Goins enters the MAC Tournament as BSU's leader in both steals (52) and assists (66), plus is third in minutes with his 28.5 average. Goins 52 steals rank fourth in the league, while his 1.79 steals-per-game average is fifth. As of games through March 6, Goins ranked 76th in the nation in steals per game. He also averages 7.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
