Women's Tennis Captures 6-1 Win Over Youngstown State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University women's tennis team captured a 6-1 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals improved their overall record to 4-3 with the win.
Ball State took an early 1-0 edge over Youngstown State after sweeping doubles. At No. 1 Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack defeated Anna Volkova and Tanisha Welch, 8-6. In a closer match the No. 2 duo of Sophie Quist and Georgina Thomson managed the win in a tie breaker over Emily Thayer and Kelly Culbertson, 9-8 (7-5). Emma Retter and Katherine Rist rounded out the wins with an easy 8-2 victory over Irena Lanc and Hannah Patten.
BSU won five of six singles matches. Quist took the lone lost 6-1, 6-1 against Volkova at No. 1. Pollack was victorious at the No. 2 spot defeating Welch, 6-3, 6-1. Calderwood earned the 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Thayer at No. 3. Hometown Muncie native Hayley Hall won at No. 4 6-1, 6-0. Thomson and Rist rounded out the remainder of the singles victories.
Ball State women's tennis takes on the University of Memphis on Friday, Feb. 29. The match will begin at 3 p.m.
