
Men's Golf Opens Spring Season in Mexico

The Ball State men's golf team opened the spring portion of its 2008 schedule at the GADO North Texas Classic at the Flamingo's Golf Club in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.
Ball State finished 13th of the 14 teams, but defeated the only other northern school competing in the tournament -- Eastern Illinois. Louisiana-Lafayette won the tournament with a three-round total 848, while Ball State posted a 916 and Eastern Illinois managed a 935. Ben Lakoff was Ball State's top finisher with a 77-71-79=227 to tie for 42nd, while Ross Cosat tied for 44th with a 77-75-76=228.
Joining Ball State and the host North Texas at the GADO North Texas Classic will be Arkansas-Little Rock, Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Eastern Illinois, Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, Missouri, New Orleans, Southeastern Louisiana, Troy and Washington.
This year's roster consists of five juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen. The only player on the Ball State roster with competitive collegiate experience heading into the fall was junior Brian Maurer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.).
During the fall season, Maurer posted the team's best average with a 72.83 mark in 18 competitive rounds. Ross Cosat (Carthage, Ind./Knightstown H.S.) was second on the team this fall with a 73.33 mark, while Ben Lakoff (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was third with a 73.55 mark.
Ball State will return to action March 16-18 at the Pinehurst Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C.
