Four Field Hockey Players Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State junior forward Brooke MacGillivary has been selected to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Team, as announced Tuesday by the league office. Seniors Jodi Mann and Melanie Pasillas along with sophomore Maura Sawicki earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention.
MacGillivary owns a 3.75 GPA as an exercise science major. She earned three assists, the first two coming in back-to-back games against then-No. 15 Michigan and Saint Louis in mid-September. She also tied for third on the team with a .667 shot on goal percentage. In addition to earning Academic All-MAC honors in 2007, she was selected to the 2008 All-MAC First Team. MacGillivary has also been listed as a member of the NFCHA National Academic Squad for the past two years.
Mann is a nursing major who owns a 3.23 GPA. Starting all 18 games this season as a top defender she was second on the team with 12 points earning five goals and two assists. She also tied for first on the team as well as tied for second in the MAC with four defensive saves. Mann posted a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester.
Pasillas, majoring in social work, tops the team with a 3.93 GPA after posting a perfect 4.0 in the spring semester. She has been a member of the NFCHA National Academic Squad for the past three years. In addition to her success in the classroom, she tallied three assists as well as three defensive saves this season for the Cardinals.
Sawicki owns a 3.30 GPA in exercise science. She played in 15 games this season allowing for quick transition passes as a midfielder. She was a 2007 Ball State Presidential Scholarship recipient. Sawicki has also been a member of the NFCHA National Academic Squad for the past two years.
A total of 12 student-athletes were named to the Academic All-MAC Team. For the second year in a row, Ohio led all schools with five selections, followed by Kent State with three.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Players are nominated by their head coach, sports information director and faculty athletics representative. The league's faculty athletics representatives then select the team through a vote.
