Newell Earns MAC West Division Player Of The Week

MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State senior forward Anthony Newell (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced. This is the second weekly award of the season for Newell (Nov. 24) and he is the only player in the MAC West to earn multiple awards this season.

“We as a program continue to be proud of the recognition for Anthony's performance this season,” head coach Billy Taylor said. “He competes at a high level for our team and is very productive offensively. He has been relentless in rebounding and his ability to step up and make the big shot or play has an impact for our team. The younger players in our program are getting an opportunity to learn from an outstanding leader.”

Newell, a preseason All-MAC selection, posted back-to-back double-doubles last week as he averaged 13.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He recorded a double-double in the Cardinals' victory at IPFW as he grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and scored 11 points. He capped the performance with the game-winning basket as time expired to send the Cardinals to victory.

Newell followed up with a 15-point, 12-rebound effort at Evansville Saturday. He has recorded five double-doubles through the first seven games this year. He is averaging 15.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game this season and is the only player in the MAC averaging a double-double on the year.

Newell and the Cardinals will begin a three-game homestand Tuesday night when they host the ninth-ranked Purdue Boilermakers at 7 p.m. at Worthen Arena.
