Newell Named MAC West Player Of The Week

MUNCIE, Ind. ? For the third time this season, Ball State senior forward Anthony Newell (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the week, the league office announced. Newell is the only player in the MAC West to earn the honors three times this season.

“Anthony continues to perform at a high level for our team this season,” head coach Billy Taylor said. “He has been a consistent scoring and rebounding threat every game. He plays with great passion and energy, which inspires the younger players on our team. I am proud of Anthony for what he has accomplished thus far and I anticipate more success from him the rest of the season.”

Newell, a team tri-captain, helped the Cardinals end a three-game slide Sunday afternoon as he scored a season-high 20 points in Ball State's 60-57 victory over Presbyterian. He connected on seven-of-13 (.538) from the field and also grabbed seven rebounds.

The game marked Newell's 54^th career double figure scoring performance and his 10^th of the season. It also marked his 11^th career 20-point or more performance of his career. He is closing in on 1,000 career points as he has now scored 953 career points.

Newell and the Cardinals will return to action after the holiday break as they play Monday, December 29 at UC-Santa Barbara.
