Newell Named MAC West Player Of The Week

MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State senior forward Anthony Newell (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is the third MAC weekly honor for Newell in his career and the first for the Cardinals this season.

“I am very proud of Anthony for being honored by the MAC,” head coach Billy Taylor said. “It is a representation for how he has played so far this season and what he has meant to our program. He is not only providing the scoring and rebounding to our team, but more importantly he has been a great leader for our program which we will rely on as the season goes forward.”

Newell, a team captain, posted back-to-back double-doubles last week against Butler and SIU-Edwardsville. He averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game over the two contests to lead the Cardinals to a 2-1 start on the year. He scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds at Butler to open the week.

Newell followed with a 15-point, 13-rebound effort in the Cardinals' win against SIUE. He has now posted 14 double-doubles for his career. He is averaging 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds through the first three games this season.

Newell shares the West Division honor with Northern Illinois guard Mike DiNunno while Al Fisher of Kent State picked up the East Division honor.

Newell and the Cardinals will be back in action Tuesday night as they take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee at U.S. Cellular Arena at 8 p.m. (ET).
