Field Hockey Falls To Miami 3-1 Sunday
October 12, 2008 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. ? In a similar outcome as its previous game, the Ball State field hockey team lost to Miami 3-1 Sunday.
Once again, the Cardinals shut down their opponents' leading scorer and fought through a physical game.
Both teams remained scoreless in the first 17 minutes until Courtney Fretz scored first for the RedHawks followed minutes later by teammate Christy Brightwell, who led in shots with eight, to put the game 2-0 at halftime.
During the first eighteen minutes of the second half, both teams fought back and forth in transition, however, Mary Hull found the back of the net for Miami at the 53:07 mark for the team's third goal.
Goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett kept Ball State in the game with just one save shy of tying the record number of saves in a game with 16. Her previous 17 saves against Villanova last season are the most for a Cardinal goalkeeper in Annette Payne's six years as head coach. Shifflett has earned 45 out of her 91 saves during the five conference games alone this season.
Statistically, Ball State was also outnumbered in penalty corners 11-9. However, it was Casey Hunsicker who connected on her second goal of the season to put the Cardinals on the board during a scramble after a penalty corner taken by Ball State late in the second half.
That would be the final goal of the day for both teams as the Cardinals were outshot 25-8, logging only two in the first half.
Ball State (1-12 overall, 0-5 MAC) concludes the first five games of conference play. The Cardinals will match up with Missouri State (1-1 overall, 10-1 MAC) for the second time this season at noon Sunday, October 19.
