October 19, 2008 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State field hockey team wrapped up its last home game with an impressive win over Missouri State Sunday 6-2.
It was a total team effort on Think Pink Weekend as six scorers attributed to the Cardinals' second win. That is the most goals Ball State has scored in a single game since 2005.
Melissa Lantz logged the first goal of the day for the Bears, however, freshman midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) quickly answered for Ball State with a goal off a penalty stroke. Kuhn is 2-2 this season on penalty shot attempts. Lantz would also score the second and final goal for Missouri State.
Sophomore defender Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Prep.) scored her first career goal off a penalty corner to put the Cardinals up 2-1 just before halftime.
Ball State wasted no time in the second half as freshman forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) earned her sixth goal of the season followed by senior forward Casey Hunsicker (Myerstown, Pa./Tulpehocken) who earned her third season goal at the 50:15 mark to give the Cardinals a 4-1 cushion.
Senior defender Jodi Mann (Clifton, Va./Centreville) also added her third season goal five minutes later on Melanie Pasillas' (Glendora, Calif./Glendora) second assist for the day off another penalty corner. The team's three seniors, playing in their last home game of the season, combined for two goals and four assists during the match.
Sophomore midfielder Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) would close out Ball State's scoring by earning her first goal and becoming the seventh player to earn their first career goal this season.
Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) stopped four of the six shots she faced from Missouri State's offensive attack.
Ball State outshot Missouri State 22-8. They also led in penalty corners 14-7 and scored on three of them.
The Cardinals improve to 2-12 overall and 1-6 in the MAC as they begin the first of a four-game road series starting 1 p.m. Saturday October 25 at Ohio (6-9 overall, 4-2 MAC). The team will then travel to Kent State (11-4 overall, 6-1 MAC) 1 p.m. Sunday October 26.
