Peyton Stovall Named MAC Player Of The Week
January 07, 2008 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Peyton Stovall (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jeff H.S.), a fifth-year senior on the Ball State men's basketball team, has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for his efforts in two games last week.
The award is the second in Stovall's career and the 64th time in school history a BSU men's basketball player has earned the honor.
“Peyton is certainly deserving of this weekly honor from the league,” said first-year BSU head coach Billy Taylor. “His effort across the board against IPFW last week was one of the best all-round performances I have ever seen. I can't say enough about Peyton's performance, not only last week, but throughout this season and his career at Ball State.”
Stovall scored 55 points in two games last week, including career-high 37 points in Ball State's Dec. 31 victory against IPFW. He also averaged 38 minutes per game and three steals, while shooting 54 percent from the floor, 46 percent from three-point range and 87 percent from free throw line.
Against IPFW, Stovall surpassed his previous career-best of 29 points against Western Michigan in 2005. In addition, Stovall's 14 made free throws and five steals were career highs, while his 10 field goals matched his career best. He scored the 37 points in 37 minutes of action, was 10-for-16 from the field, 3-for-4 from three-point range and 14-for-17 from the line. The senior co-captain also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, plus handed out four assists.
In the MAC opener Sunday at Toledo, Stovall scored 18 points and pulled in four rebounds. For the week, he averaged 27.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
Stovall, one of five national finalists for the prestigious Coach John Wooden Citizenship Cup, has also been named one the top 30 seniors in college basketball and is a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
Ball State returns to action Jan. 13 at 2p.m. against Central Michigan in Muncie. The game is the first of three games in six days at Worthen Arena, as Western Michigan (Jan. 16) and Eastern Michigan (Jan. 19) also visit.
