September 30, 2007 | Women's Golf
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Freshman Brittany Kelly carded a final-round 79 to tie for eighth overall and lead the Ball State women's golf team to a seventh-place at the Nittany Lion Invitational.
Princeton won the 14-team event with a total score of 910, while Maryland was second overall at 925.
Ball State's three-round score of 962 was good for seventh.
Ball State, which opened Sunday's action with a team score of 323, lowered the mark by seven strokes in the afternoon for a 316. Kelly's round of 74 was low for the Cardinals, allowing her to tie for sixth overall and just one stroke from third place entering the final round.
In Monday's round, Kelly was the only Cardinal to post a sub-80 score en route to finishing eighth. Rachel Pruett posted an 80, while Kirsty O'Connor and Amy Roberts each carded an 82. Paige Esford finished with an 83.
"Brittany had a solid tournament," said BSU head coach Katherine Mowat. "It was a difficult golf course and a tough field, so we held our own over the last two days. We know we can play better, but overall this was a good experience for our young team."
