Brian Maurer Leads Golf At BGSU; Cardinals Place Fifth Overall

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Junior Brian Maurer opened the 2007 fall season with a first-round 69, while junior newcomer Andrew Rhodes posted an afternoon round of 68 to lead the Ball State men's golf team at the John Piper Invitational.
Overall, the two were the only Cardinals to post sub-80 rounds in Tuesday's final round as the Cardinals carded a team score of 308 to place fifth in the 15-team event.
"We maintained our position on Tuesday, but we can't expect to move up without under-par scores," says BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "I think we were able to get some competitive experience for our guys and I am looking forward to hosting our own Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational next week."
Eastern Kentucky placed first at 20-under par (283-278-283), while the host Falcons placed second at six-under (284-279-295).
On Monday, the Cardinals lowered their morning round by 14 strokes. Ball State posted a team score of 294 in the first round and a 288 in round two.
"We didn't play well to open the day, but I am really proud of the way we bounced back in the afternoon," Fleck said. "We were able to post a competitive score in the afternoon and start heading in the right direction. It's a fairly easy golf course, so we need to have more under-par rounds."
Maurer (69-77-72) was BSU's top performer with his 10th-place effort. Rhodes (78-68-74) tied for 14th.
Ross Cosat (75-72-81) tied for 39th, Matt Schumaker (73-74-82) tied for 46th and Ben Lakoff (77-74-81) tied for 57th.
Ball State returns to action Sept. 17-18 when it hosts the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club in Muncie. The event will feature live hole-by-hole scoring exclusively on www.ballstatesports.com.
