MUNCIE, Ind. -- Junior Brian Maurer shot a 65, while sophomore Ross Cosat matched the 65 as the Ball State men's golf team moved into a fourth-place finish at the 17-team Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.
Maurer improved his position by 23 spots Tuesday to finish eighth overall, while Cosat finished ninth.
The rounds of 65 tie for the third-lowest 18-hole score in BSU history, marking the seventh and eighth times respectively in school history a BSU player has carded a 65.
"Brian and Ross came to play today and I am very pleased with their performance," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "We were challenged today and I thought we responded as a team.
"The 274 team score certainly is a step in the right direction and should provide plenty of motivation for this team and what they are capable of."
As a team, the Cardinal posted the lowest team score on Tuesday with a round of 274. The 274 ranks second in school history for an 18-hole team score, trailing only the 271 registered by the 2005 team at the Yestingsmeier Invitational.
Toledo won the event with a team score of 842, five strokes better than second-place Eastern Kentucky (847).
Austin Peay's Grant Leaver was the individual medalist with rounds of 68-68-70, one stroke better than runner-up Mark Sommerfeld (66-68-73) from Detroit.
The invitational is named in honor of former Ball State men's golf coach and sports information director Earl Yestingsmeier. Yestingsmeier coached the Cardinals from 1962-1998 and amassed an overall record of 206-51-2.
“The thing that I am most proud of is that we get to host a quality Division I tournament in honor of our former coach and all the things that he has done for our program and for college golf over the years,” Fleck said, a former player under Yestingsmeier.
The Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational is the only home event for the Ball State men's golf team for the duration of the 2007-08 year.
