Joseph Price Named Men's Basketball Assistant Coach
August 31, 2007 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Joseph Price, who completed his fifth season as an assistant coach at IUPUI in 2006-07, has been named an assistant coach at Ball State University, according to BSU first-year head coach Billy Taylor.
Price's selection completes Taylor's staff at Ball State, joining assistant coaches Bob Simmons, Jim Molinari and director of basketball operations Jay Newberry.
“I am excited to add Joseph to our staff at Ball State,” Taylor said. “He is a local product from Marion (Ind.) and played both at Notre Dame and professionally overseas. Joseph brings a different type of experience to our program. He's recruited the state of Indiana and has landed some quality prospects. His values, background and familiarity with this state will make his addition to our program highly successful.”
At IUPUI, Price's primary role included player development, opponent scouting and recruiting, while also working with the post players along with individual defensive and shooting instruction.
Price, who was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's 2007 Men's Silver Anniversary Team which recognizes outstanding high school graduates from 25 years earlier, is known throughout basketball circles for his ability to shoot and teach players the fundamentals of shooting.
In 2005-06, IUPUI ranked among the nation's best free throw shooting teams, while the year before the Jaguars' Brandon Cole and Akeem Clark teamed to create one of the most formidable three-point shooting duos in the country.
His work with the post players helped 2003 Mid-Con Player of the Year Odell Bradley evolve his game into an inside-outside threat as a senior. Price's interior work was also evidenced as the Jaguars' out-rebounded opponents by better than three boards per contest in 2004-05.
Active in the local communities, Price has made numerous speaking appearances all over the state of Indiana ranging from youth groups prior to Indiana Fever games at Conseco Fieldhouse, serving as a motivational speaker for the Executive Service Corps of Indiana through the United Way, to speaking to students about athletics and academics.
Price played collegiately at Notre Dame for a coaching staff that included head coach Digger Phelps (ESPN Analyst) and assistants Pete Gillen (Virginia), Jim Baron (Rhode Island) and Gary Brokaw (NBA's Charlotte Bobcats). He received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Notre Dame in 1986. Following his senior season, he was chosen in the 1986 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets in the seventh round.
The Irish went 84-37 in Price's four seasons including finishing as the runner-up in the postseason National Invitational Tournament (NIT) his sophomore year. He averaged a career-best 6.2 points per game as a senior as Notre Dame's sixth-man in 1985-86. That season, the Irish ranked as high as tenth in The Associated Press poll. He closed his Notre Dame career ranked fifth all-time in career games played (115). He now stands 16th in that category in the Irish record books.
The 6-foot-5 Price opted to play professionally overseas in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain. He also instructed at the Swiss All-Star Basketball Camps every summer during his playing career.
With St. Prex in 1987-88, Price helped the basketball club to the Switzerland Second Division League-B Championship. He also played with Dallas Mavericks' star forward Dirk Nowitzki in DJK S. Oliver Wurzburg in 1998-99. Fluent in French and Spanish, he spent a summer as an English instructor in Saint Prex, Switzerland.
Prior to college, Price excelled on the hardwood at Marion High School in Marion, Ind. He was a three-time All-North Central Conference selection for Indiana Hall of Fame coach Bill Green. He also served as team captain and was a member of the Indiana All-Star Team and a Mr. Basketball candidate as a senior.
Price was the junior varsity coach at Indianapolis Manual High School in 2001-02, before joining the IUPUI staff the following season.
Price has one daughter, Naomi.
