CARBONDALE, Ill. ? The Ball State Softball team went 1-1 on day two of the Kay Brechtelsbauer Southern Classic. Ball State defeated Western Illinois 9-5, but fell to Indiana 2-6.
Ball State hit three home runs against Western Illinois to tie the single-season team home run record at 18. Leading the way for Ball State was senior Taylor Yancey.
Yancey went 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs. Her first home run came in the first inning and gave the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead. Yancey came back in the second inning to hit her second home run and extend the lead to 5-1.
Juniors Amanda Pick and Abby Gross made an impact as Pick hit Ball State's 18th home run of the season. Gross came to bat in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and delivered a double that scored all three base runners.
“Our players are starting to understand our hitting philosophies,” says BSU head coach Craig Nicholson. “Hopefully the home runs are a sign of things to come in the future.”
Allie Pennock went 2-for-4 against the Westerwinds. Pennock scored two runs and stole three bases.
Elizabeth Milian picked up the win by throwing a complete game. Milian recorded seven strikeouts and only allowed five hits.
In the second game Ball State jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning. Pennock reached on a walk and went on to steal two bases. She scored the first run for the Cardinals by advancing to home on a wild pitch.
Over the weekend, Pennock stole eight bases, which puts her at 10 for the season.
Milian singled to drive in Yancey for Ball State's second run in the first inning. Milian finished the game 2-for-3.
Pick was on the mound to face the Hoosiers. Pick did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when Indiana's Tory Yamaguchi hit a solo home run.
The Cardinals held onto a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning, when back-up shortstop Stephanie Pellerito hit a grand slam to put Indiana on top 5-2.
Ball State's first home softball game has been rescheduled due to the heavy amount of snow and wet conditions. The doubleheader against IUPUI will be played in Muncie on April 11, with the first game starting at 2:00 p.m.
