Softball Breaks Single-Season Home Run Record
March 15, 2007 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Ball State Softball team swept Jacksonville 6-2 and 3-1 in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, the Cardinals got things started in the fourth inning when leadoff hitter Allie Pennock beat out a throw by the shortstop to get a single. Kelli Jeziorski then moved Pennock to third with her base hit.
Jeziorski went on to steal second with Taylor Yancey up at bat. Yancey reached on a fielder's choice but Pennock was thrown out at home trying to score. The Cardinals then went for a double steal that took Yancey to second and allowed Jeziorski to score the first run of the game.
After a single by Abby Gross, junior Amanda Pick came to the plate and delivered a two out single that scored both base runners making the score 3-0.
The Cardinals put the game away in the top of the seventh by scoring three more runs off of a double by Pennock. Pennock finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a steal, and a run scored.
Freshman Elizabeth Milian threw another complete game to improve her record to 3-2 with a 2.49 ERA.
In game two, the Cardinals struck early scoring all three of their runs in the first two innings.
The game started with a lead-off walk. Pennock then stole second to move into scoring position. With two outs in the top of the first inning Gross made BSU history as she hit the 19th home run of the season for the Cardinals marking a new single-season team home run record.
Sophomore Laura Masch picked up her first win of the season as she held Jacksonville to only one run off two hits. Pick came in for the save. She struck out two batters in the final two innings and did not give the Dolphins a chance for the comeback.
“We didn't execute that well on offense,” says BSU head coach Craig Nicholson. “But we showed some toughness and showed ourselves that we can win close ball games.”
The Cardinals return to action March 15, for another doubleheader this time against North Florida. The first game will start at 2 p.m.
