After falling behind 4-3 early in the opening set, a Lakers attack error set up an eight-point BSU service run from Doug Willmann (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell North H.S.) that gave
A kill from Jeff Schmitz (
Schmitz would serve the Cardinals to a 3-0 advantage in the second game, drawing a pair of Laker attack errors and an ace in the opening run. The hosts would tie the game at 5-5, before another strong BSU service run, this time from Meyer, gave the Cardinals a six-point lead at 11-5.
The hosts would get as close as four points at the 20-16 mark, before Ben Irwin (
In the third frame, the Lakers would score three of the first four points and maintain an advantage through the 16-14 mark. However, a kill from Willmann and a block assist from Orr and Chamberlain would tie the set and spark a 5-0 Cardinals' run giving BSU a 19-16 advantage.
Mercyhurst would follow with the next three points, tying the set at 19, only to see another five-point Cardinals' run put the visitors up 24-19. Once again, the Lakers would battle back, trailing by one point at 28-27. BSU's Chamberlain would follow with a kill to give the Cardinals their first match point at 29-27.
A BSU service error, followed by an ace from the Lakers' Jeff Hartman would tie the game at 29-29. That would be the last tie of the set, however, as Orr logged a solo block and Termion followed with the match-winning kill.
Two Cardinals finish the match with 1.000 attack percentages, as McCarthy logged four kills on four swings and Schmitz connected on all three of his attempts. Schmitz would also finish the match with 28 assists and tie four other players with a match-best six digs.
