Men's Basketball Inks Three Recruits
November 19, 2007 | Men's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. ? Maurice Hubbard (Chantilly, Va./Westfield H.S.), Pierre Sneed (Chicago, Ill./Simeon H.S.) and Eric Wormely (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township H.S.) have each signed national letters of intent to attend Ball State University and compete for the men's basketball program, according to first-year BSU head coach Billy Taylor.
The trio of signees mark the first recruiting class for Taylor and his staff at Ball State.
“We are very excited to bring these three young men into our Ball State family,” Taylor said. “Maurice, Pierre and Eric have the characteristics, integrity and work ethic we value and look for in prospects. They also obviously have the basketball skills to help us in key positions as move forward.”
Hubbard, a 6-foot-6 forward, is a senior at Westfield H.S. near Washington, D.C. As a junior last year, Hubbard led his team to a 19-7 record, while averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds per game. Hubbard is the son of current Washington Wizards assistant coach Phil Hubbard, who played at Michigan before a 10-year career in the NBA.
“Mo is a talented combination forward, with a nice frame and athleticism,” Taylor said. “He has tremendous bloodlines with his father Phil, who has played and now coaches at the highest level. We expect Mo to continue to improve and contribute immediately.”
Sneed, a 6-4 guard, enters his senior season at Simeon H.S. in Chicago as a member of the top-ranked team in the state of Illinois after winning two straight state championships. Sneed becomes the third player from Simeon to continue his playing career at Ball State, joining current Cardinal Anthony Newell and former player Cameron Echols, who completed his career at BSU in 2004.
“Pierre is a tall, athletic wing with good ballhandling skills,” Taylor said. “He brings incredible toughness and continues to play at a high level. He has been a key component in Simeon's state championships and will compete for another this year. There is also a history of Simeon players doing well at Ball State with Anthony Newell and Cameron Echols.”
Wormely, a 6-8 forward who is a sophomore at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, Ill., averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds in his first junior college season a year ago. Wormely was an All Arrowhead Conference selection last season, plus was named to the NJCAA All Region Team. In his most recent outing at Kishwaukee, Wormely poured in 15 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and posted four blocks in a Nov. 13 win.
“Eric brings needed size to our front court,” Taylor said. “He is a terrific young man, who works very hard. He has done very well at the junior college level. Eric is an aggressive rebounder, runs the floor well and can provide the inside presence we are looking for.”
