MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite a double-double performance which included a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds from junior Anthony Newell, plus a career-high 19 points for junior Laron Frazier, Ball State fell in overtime to Milwaukee 81-74 Wednesday night at Worthen Arena.
The visiting Panthers rallied from a trio of 17-point deficits in the second half to force overtime.
"Tonight was certainly a heart-breaking loss for our team and program," first-year BSU head coach Billy Taylor said. "I thought our kids played great in the first 20 minutes. I thought our guys were there. I wish they could have won this one, because they put themselves in position to win."
Milwaukee used eight three-point field goals in the second half -- including two in the final 10 seconds to force overtime.
Paige Paulsen, who scored all 19 points after halftime, hit the first with 10 seconds remaining to cut the BSU lead to 65-64, while an off-balance three as time expired from Ricky Franklin tied the score at 67.
"We have to get through and find a way to get a win," Taylor said. "I thought we put ourselves in position and they made two incredible shots."
The Panthers converted on four of their six field goals and added six free throws to outscore BSU 14-7 in overtime.
Newell notched the fifth 20-point game of his career with the 29 points, also in a career-best 43 minutes.
Frazier added 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting in his first start.
Freshman Melvin Goins finished with eight points and eight rebounds in 40 minutes, while fifth-year senior Peyton Stovall registered his second straight double-figure rebounding game with 10 boards.
The Cardinals, who fall to 0-2, return to action Nov. 21 against No. 5 Georgetown at Worthen Arena.
