Swimming & Diving Opens Season at Dennis Stark Relays

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams began the 2007-08 season at the Dennis Stark relays on Friday night at Notre Dame.
The women placed third in the first event which was the 200 free relay. The foursome of freshman Katie Bylsma, senior Addison Del Rio, junior Lauren Harger and sophomore Kelly Johnson clocked in a time of 1:39.67.
The BSU men also opened the meet with a third place finish in the 200 free relay. The team of sophomore Ben Battjes, classmate Austin Laska along with sophomores Chris Steindorff and Josh Young turned in a time of 1:28.86.
Ball State women won the 400 yard fly with a time of 4:00.31. The women also prevailed with a first place finish in the 400 breast relay after capturing a time of 4:36.82.
BSU men finished second in the 400 breast relay with a time of 4:17.31.
Both the men and women finished with multiple third place showings.
Sophomore Lisa Maertin and senior Valerie McGowan each combined for a 424.05 final to finish second in the 1-meter event. Maertin and McGowan finished second the 3-meter after scoring a final total of 185.45. Freshman Jeremy Whited and junior David Linn pulled off a second place showing in the 3-meter with a total of 158.00.
Ball State men's and women's swimming and diving will host Eastern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 12 at Lewellen Aquatic Center. The meet will begin at 5 pm.
