
Swimming & Diving Opens Dual Action at Home vs. Eastern Illinois

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving team kicked off dual action with wins at home against Eastern Illinois on Friday night at Lewellen Aquatic Center. The women won their meet 143 to 85 while the men earned a 139 to 94 victory.
The Ball State women started the night off with a top finish in the 400 yard medley relay. Sophomore Katie Jasmon (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Hearth Griffin) along with teammates senior Addison Del Rio (Munster, Ind./Munster), true freshmen Maria Gramelspacher (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) and Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney) recorded a time of 4:02.48.
The men also won their medley relay with the foursome of sophomore Tyler Dixon (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jeffersonville), senior Ryan Franklin (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central), freshman Wells Arwood (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) and sophomore Josh Young(Huntington, Ind./North) after turning in a time of 3:38.94.
Sophomore Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson) clocked in a 10:44.98 in the 1000 yard free to win the event while junior Kyle Hembree (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge) captured a time of 10:17.08 to earn the win for the men. Hembree also took first in the 500 free (5:01.54).
Del Rio collected a win in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.44 and junior Mark Augustyn (Highland, Ind./Highland) placed first in that same event (1:47.09).
Bylsma won the 50 free (24.65) and Ben Battjes (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) took first for the men (21.68). Battjes also won the 100 free (49.17).
Other first place winners were Gramelspacher in the 200 fly (2:08.82), Arwood in the 200 fly (1:59.47), junior Lauren Harger (Avon, Ind./Avon) in the 100 free (54.44), junior Erika Paul (McCordsville, Ind./Hamilton SE) in the 200 back (2:11.92), Dixon in the 200 back (2:01.09) and sophomore Emily Hurst (Zionsville, Ind./North Central) in the 500 free (5:23.64).
The BSU men ended the night strong with a win in the 200 free relay.
In diving Valerie McGowan (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) swept top honors in the 1-meter with a score of 230.46 and in the 3-meter with a 224.93 final. Teammate David Linn (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) placed second in both events for the men with a 221.48 in the 1-meter and a 233.10 in the 3-meter.
