LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Behind a final-round 67 from junior Ben Lakoff and a score of 68 from junior Andrew Rhodes, the Ball State men's golf team posted a team score of 279 Tuesday to climb four spots and finish fifth at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
The 17-team tournament was hosted by New Mexico State.
The Cardinals opened the tournament with a team score of 286 to place among the leaders, before an afternoon round of 291 on Monday.
BSU went 12 strokes lower Tuesday with its 279 -- the fourth-best on the afternoon.
"A top-five finish was our goal," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "I am really proud of the way we responded on Tuesday, especially with Ben's 67 and Andrew's 68.
"Today, for the final competitive round of our fall season, I think we caught yet another glimpse of just how good we can be. We should take this final round into the spring season with some confidence."
Lakoff tied for 13th overall, while junior Brian Maurer tied for 23rd. Rhodes tied for 36th.
Complete results.
