MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State Soccer team overcame a tough opponent and Mother Nature as the Cardinals knocked off regional rival Indiana State, 3-2, on Friday afternoon in their home opener at the BSU Soccer Field. Sophomore forward Emily Rein capped off the victory with a goal in the 89th minute after the teams overcame an 80-minute lightning delay.
"We showed a lot of heart and resiliency this afternoon," head coach Michelle Salmon said. "We didn't quit at any point in the game and came out after the delay and upped the tempo to a level that carried us to victory."
The game started slowly in the first half with the Cardinals controlling the play of the game as they out-shot Indiana State, 8-3 in the opening stanza. The Cardinals had a couple of chances in the first half including a shot by senior Sarah Maxwell that was taken off of the goal line by an ISU defender.
Both teams came out of halftime and started quickly as the Sycamores opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Sarah Whiteley was able to beat BSU goalkeeper Rachael Murphy to put ISU ahead, 1-0.
