Soccer Knocks Off The Big Ten's Northwestern, 1-0

Evanston, Ill. ? The Ball State soccer team picked up its second victory of the weekend as the Cardinals went on the road and knocked off Big Ten member Northwestern, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The victory improves the Cardinals to
"Today was a great team effort, especially on the defensive end," head coach Michelle Salmon said. "We took advantage of our opportunities on offense and held strong in our own end. This is a great victory for our program to beat a quality team like Northwestern."
The teams battled back and forth all game long in the evenly matched contest including a scoreless first half. Both teams registered six shots apiece in the first half while playing through a rain-soaked afternoon.
The Cardinals came out in the second half and took control of the pace as they out-shot the Wildcats, 12-4, in the second stanza. Ball State finally broke through against Northwestern (
Midfielder Vandi Ogden put the Cardinals in position to score as she placed a ball into the box off of a set piece to midfielder Amy Holst. Holst took the ball on one touch and placed a shot past the diving goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
Cardinal goalkeeper Rachael Murphy recorded her second shutout of the season as she recorded a game-high seven saves. The shutout is her first career shutout victory as she posted a shutout in a scoreless tie earlier this year.
