KENT, Ohio - The Ball State field hockey team won nearly every offensive category Saturday at Kent State, but the Cardinals lost the game 2-1.
Ball State fired 16 shots and nine shots on goal to Kent State's nine shots and four shots on goal. The Cardinals attempted 15 penalty corners to nine for the Golden Flashes.
"The kids know they played hard and came out on top in a number of categories," Ball State coach Annette Payne said. "This was some of our best hockey of the season. We played well, and that's what is important."
Ball State converted just one of its corner opportunities, while Kent State scored on two of its corners.
With the Cardinals trailing 2-0 in the second half, Lindsay Quay put Ball State on the scoreboard, finding the back of the cage on a penalty corner. Carla Chiampi and Jodi Mann picked up assists on the play as Quay recorded her fifth goal of the season.
Quay led all players in the game with 10 shots and six shots on goal.
"We attacked them a lot," Payne said. "That was our gameplan, and we stuck to it. In the first half, we had a lot of play in front of the cage, but we just couldn't find the net."
Neither team was able to score over the final 23 minutes of the contest as Kent State held on for the win.
The Golden Flashes built their lead by converting on two penalty corners of their own. Kate Perry got the scoring started early, knocking in a pass from Charlotte Muller less than three minutes into the game.
That goal proved to be the only one of the first half, but Muller extended the Kent State lead early in the second half on a goal of her own at the 43:37 mark.
Three minutes later, Quay notched her goal for the Cardinals.
In addition to Quay's performance, Chiampi, Jamie Kahn and Amanda Pavone each recorded shots on goal for Ball State.
The Cardinals (1-8, 0-2 MAC) will play their fifth consecutive road game Wednesday when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on sixth-ranked Ohio State. The team then returns home for its Mid-American Conference home opener Friday against Central Michigan at 3 p.m.
