ATHENS, Ohio - The Ball State field hockey team opened the Mid-American Conference portion of its schedule Friday with a 4-0 loss on the road at Ohio.
The Bobcats scored three goals in a 10 minute span to take control of the game in the first half.
Rachelle Coetzee put Ohio on the scoreboard with a goal 16 minutes into the contest, and Estienne Coetzee followed with a goal of her own six minutes later. When Megan Rentschler connected on an assist from Torrie Albini at the 26-minute mark, the Bobcats stretched their advantage to 3-0.
For the game, Ohio out-shot the Cardinals 12-3. Jamie Kahn, Katie Kloeckener and Tara Reed each recorded shots on goal for Ball State.
Ohio tacked on another score in the second half on a goal from Katelyn Shelley. Albini picked up her second assist on the play.
Ball State goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett saw her first action of the season, entering the game in the second half and keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard for the final 16:28.
The loss drops Ball State to 1-7, while Ohio improves to 4-5. The Cardinals return to action Saturday at Kent State. That game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
