Northwestern 4, Ball State 3
August 27, 2006 | Field Hockey
The Ball State field hockey team rallied to score two goals in the final 11 minutes Sunday, but it was not enough to defeat Northwestern.
The Cardinals fell to the Wildcats 4-3 at BSU Turf Field in the second match of their season-opening weekend.
Senior forward Lindsay Quay scored two goals, and junior forward Katie Kloeckener added one for the Cardinals. Dating back to the 2005 season, Quay has now scored in six of Ball State's past eight matches.
Quay's second goal came on a breakaway in the final minute, when she split three defenders and put the ball in the back of the cage as she fell to the turf. The goal cut Northwestern's lead to one goal for the first time since the first half, but time expired before the Ball State could tie the game.
"We've got to do the right things, and make the right choices," Ball State coach Annette Payne said. "We made a choice to try to come back late, and we scored two goals. But we've got to make the choice to play the entire game."
Quay had also scored Ball State's first goal at the 11:52 mark in the first half. Northwestern goalkeeper Emily Kyle tried to clear the ball, but Quay intercepted it and ripped a shot from the top of the circle.
Kyle saved three shots for Northwestern, and Ball State freshman goalkeeper Caroline Lehman saved eight shots.
Sandwiched between Quay's goals, Kloeckener notched he first goal of the season, deflecting a Jodi Mann pass into the left side of the cage.
Kloeckener and Quay led all players with three shots on goal each, but Northwestern recorded 24 shots overall to Ball State's 10.
Northwestern's Christina Foley opened the scoring with a goal on a penalty corner at the 7:33 mark in the first half. Quay's first goal came four minutes later and knotted the score at 1-1, but the Wildcats rattled off three straight goals to give themselves a 4-1 lead before Ball State's late run.
Northwestern forward Alex Quinn led the Wildcats with a goal and an assist.
Ball State falls to 0-2 on the season and will return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against Indiana at BSU Turf Field.
