Soccer Rolls to 5-1 Victory over IPFW

Fort Wayne, Ind. ? The Ball State soccer team opened the 2006 regular season in impressive fashion as the Cardinals cruised to a 5-1 victory over hosting IPFW on Friday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Cardinals scored the first five goals of the game from five different players to improve to 5-0-1 all-time against the Mastodons.
"We did a good job attacking-wise especially in the second half as we were more dynamic and put a lot of pressure on their back line," first-year head coach Michelle Salmon said. "I am pleased with our performance tonight and it is a good way to start our season."
The Cardinals opened the season's scoring in just the 13th minute of the game as senior midfielder Amy Holst drilled home a corner kick from junior Angie Heyer to give BSU a 1-0 lead. Ball State continued to apply the pressure on IPFW as sophomore midfielder Katelyn Alexander scored the second goal in the 39th minute on a fantastic individual effort for the unassisted goal.
The Cardinals added their third goal of the night in the 48th minute as junior forward Sarah Leibel scored an unassisted goal with another strong solo effort.
Ball State put the game out of reach with a two-goal spurt in just under three minutes of action. Junior Laura Bandy started the two-goal effort in the 75th minute as she chipped the IPFW goalkeeper from 25 yards off an assist by sophomore Sarah Schumacker. Vandi Ogden closed out the Cardinals attack in the 77th minute as she took a pass from Heyer and blasted a shot past the diving Mastodon goalkeeper to put Ball State ahead, 5-0.
IPFW (0-1-0) spoiled the Cardinals shutout effort in the 80th minute as Heather Currie got a shot past BSU goalkeeper Rachael Murphy off of a corner kick to close out the scoring. Murphy played all 90 minutes while making her first career collegiate start in the victory.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Illinois State. Game time is set for
