Normal, Ill. ? The Ball State soccer team played to a deadlocked 1-1 double overtime tie with hosting Illinois State on Sunday afternoon at the Adelaide Street Field. Sophomore Sarah Schumaker came in as a first half reserve and tallied the Cardinals' lone goal of the afternoon to move Ball State's record to 1-0-1 on the young season.
"Defensively we did a very nice job today from start to finish," head coach Michelle Salmon said. "We fought and battled all game long and never let up over the entire 110 minutes of play. It was a very physical game and a very evenly matched contest."
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the 38th minute as Schumaker placed a shot past the diving Redbird goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. Senior midfielder Vandi Ogden picked up her second assist of the season on the goal off of a nifty passing sequence.
Ball State goalkeeper Rachael Murphy held Illinois State (0-1-1) in check for most of the game before surrendering a Redbird goal in the 74th minutes of action. Jaclyn Rucinski scored on a header off of a corner kick to knot the game up at one apiece.
Both teams went back and for in the two overtime periods but where unable to break the stalemate. Murphy finished the game with a career-high nine saves as she played all 110 minutes of action.
The Cardinals will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Flagstaff, Ariz. to take part in the LaQuinta Inn & Suites Mountain Classic. The Cardinals will face off against Northern Arizona on Friday night and Portland State on Sunday afternoon.
