November 03, 2006 | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio - The Ball State field hockey team used a big first half Friday to defeat Miami 3-0 and advance to the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The second-seeded Cardinals will face host and No. 1 seed Ohio at 2 p.m. Saturday in the title game.
All three Cardinal goals in Friday's victory came in the opening 35 minutes of play.
Ball State took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Katie Kloeckener took a Casey Hunsicker pass and found an opening in the right side of the cage. The play began when Lindsay Quay got the ball near midfield and passed ahead to Hunsicker, who drove toward the left side of the goal and passed to Kloeckener on the right.
It was the fourth goal of the season for Kloeckener and the first assist for Hunsicker.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the 24th minute on their fifth penalty corner of the day. After passing the ball in on the corner, Carla Chiampi snuck in toward the goal, received the ball back on a pass from Quay and put the ball in the cage.
The goal was the fourth on the season for Chiampi, and the assist was the second of the year for Quay.
Chiampi and Quay were again involved in Ball State's third goal of the day on another penalty corner. Chiampi fired the ball into Jodi Mann, who stopped it for Quay. The MAC Player of the Year ripped a shot into the back of the cage to extend the Cardinals' lead to 3-0 at the half.
Ball State played defense in the second half to secure the lead. Goalkeeper Caroline Lehman saved nine shots to earn her second consecutive shutout and third shutout of the season. She has held opponents scoreless in regulation over the past three games.
