Quay Earns Player Of The Year, Four Cardinals Named All-MAC
November 02, 2006 | Field Hockey
Ball State senior Lindsay Quay has been named the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Player of the Year, as announced Thursday by the league office. In addition, Quay and three other Cardinals earned All-MAC recognition.
During the regular season, Quay led Ball State and ranked second in the conference with 13 goals. Her four game-winning goals and 97 shots topped the MAC, and her 27 points ranked fifth in the conference.
Quay scored her final regular season goal Sunday in a 2-0 win at Missouri State that assured Ball State a tie for second place in the conference and the No. 2 seed in this week's MAC Tournament. The goal was the 36th of Quay's career, tying her for sixth place on Ball State's all-time goals scored list, two goals shy of fifth place. The 2003 MAC Freshman of the Year, Quay has earned All-MAC First Team honors in each of the past three seasons.
In addition to Quay's Player of the Year award and All-MAC First Team recognition, fellow senior Carla Chiampi was also named to the All-MAC First Team. Chiampi, a 2004 All-MAC Second Team selection, finished the season with four goals and tied for team-high honors with five assists. She scored the game-winning goal Sept. 29 on an overtime penalty stroke to give Ball State a 2-1 win over Central Michigan.
To go along with the first team selections, senior midfielder Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley H.S.) and junior forward Lauren Cruz were named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Reed scored five goals and added two assists on the season. Her two-goal performance Oct. 13 helped Ball State earn a 3-2 victory over Ohio, snapping a 14-game losing streak to the Bobcats. Cruz, who also earned All-MAC Second Team recognition in 2005, helped Ball State control the ball on the offensive end of the field. She finished the season with one assist and nine shots and was a major factor in the Cardinals winning six of their last eight games.
The Cardinals have had at least four players earn All-MAC honors five years in a row. Quay is the first Ball State player since Sally Northcroft in 1998 and 1999 to earn the league's Player of the Year award.
Ball State will open MAC Tournament play Friday at 2:30 p.m. in semifinal action against third-seeded Miami on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The winner will advance to Saturday's championship game at 2 p.m.
