Field Hockey Defeats Missouri State, Earns Third Straight Home Victory
October 08, 2006 | Field Hockey
The Ball State field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory over Mid-American Conference foe Missouri State Sunday at BSU Turf Field.
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 2-2 in the MAC (3-9 overall). The team has now won two games in a row and three straight at home.
Two early goals would be all Ball State would need. Senior midfielder Tara Reed opened the scoring 4:14 into the contest, knocking a Katie Kloeckener pass into the cage.
Linday Quay extended the Cardinals' lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later when her shot from the right side of the cage deflected off a Missouri State defender and snuck past the goalkeeper.
"Those two goals were beautiful," Ball State coach Annette Payne said. "They were things we had worked on in practice, and they worked out perfectly."
Quay's goal was her seventh of the season. The senior forward fired a season-high 12 shots and 10 shots on goal. Kloeckener and Reed each added three shots for the Cardinals.
From there, the Ball State defense took over. The Cardinals allowed one goal, which came in the 13th minute off the stick of Missouri State forward Stephani Wehrman.
That was the only shot on goal the Bears could manage in the game. Ball State attempted 22 shots and 18 on goal to Missouri State's nine shots and one on goal.
Missouri State goalkeeper Kim Kinsella made 16 saves.
"It wasn't perfect, but it was still a win," Payne said. "We'll take some things from this game and gain from it."
Ball State returns to action Friday, when the Cardinals host Ohio at 3 p.m.
