Field Hockey Ends Regular Season With Road Win at Missouri State
October 29, 2006 | Field Hockey
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Ball State field hockey team scored both of its goals in a four-minute span, and Caroline Lehman earned her second career shutout as the Cardinals earned a 2-0 win Sunday at Missouri State.
With the win, Ball State finished the regular season 7-11 (6-4 MAC) and in a three-way tie for second place in the Mid-American Conference with Miami and Central Michigan.
After a scoreless first half, Ball State found the cage for the first time at the 42:03 mark. Lindsay Quay scored on an uncontested shot from six yards out to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
"In the second half, we got the opportunity to run with it and put it in the net, and we did that," Ball State coach Annette Payne said.
With that goal, Quay now owns 13 goals on the season and 36 in her collegiate career. She is tied for sixth place on Ball State's all-time goals scored list, two goals shy of fifth place.
Less than four minutes after Quay's goal, in the 46th minute, Amanda Pavone gave Ball State a two-goal lead. Pavone scored from 10 yards out to earn her fourth goal of the season.
Two goals proved to be more than enough for Lehman and the Ball State defense. Coming off MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, the Cardinals' goalkeeper stopped all nine shots she faced.
"We played really well defensively," Payne said. "Our defensive players had their work cut out for them, and they came up big."
Ball State has now won six of its last eight games. The Cardinals will play in the MAC Tournament this week with the league's NCAA Tournament bid up for grabs. The tournament begins Thursday at Ohio.
