October 23, 2006 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State freshman goalkeeper Caroline Lehman has been named the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference office.
In Ball State's three games last week, Lehman made a total of 34 saves. In two games against Miami, Lehman faced 29 shots and saved 27 of them. She also added seven saves in Friday's loss at Central Michigan.
Tuesday at Miami, Lehman helped Ball State to a 3-1 victory by matching her career-high with 12 saves. She shut out the RedHawks with five saves in a scoreless first half and added seven more saves as the Cardinals took control in the second half.
Facing Miami again on Sunday, Lehman set a new career-high with 15 saves. She stopped nine shots in the first half and six more in the second half on her way to shutting Miami out through regulation. The only goal she allowed came in the fourth minute of overtime when a Miami shot deflected off a Ball State stick and into the cage.
Lehman currently ranks third in the MAC with 107 saves on the season. She also has one shutout, which came Sept. 9 against Saint Louis. Lehman has started all 17 games in the cage for Ball State.
The defensive honor is the first of the season for Ball State. The Cardinals' Lindsay Quay has earned the league's offensive player of the week award twice.
Ball State (6-11, 5-4 MAC) is currently tied for third place in the conference with Miami. The Cardinals travel to Missouri State for the final regular season contest of the year Sunday. The MAC Tournament begins Nov. 2 at Ohio.
