Kalamazoo, Mich. ? The Ball State soccer team closed out the road portion of the 2006 regular season in impressive fashion as the Cardinals picked up a 3-0 victory at Western Michigan in Mid-American Conference action on a cold and damp Sunday afternoon. Forward Emily Rein posted her first multiple goal game of the season and her third two-goal game of her career.

"Today was a really solid performance from top to bottom in some adverse conditions," head coach Michelle Salmon said. "We did a good job in the final third on a sloppy field while our defense did an awesome job from the very beginning."
The Cardinals came out in the first half and controlled the tempo with their midfield. Ball State opened the scoring in the 28th minute as defender Lindsay Martin fired a shot from the top of the box that found the cross bar. The ball caromed into the box where Rein was able to secure the loose ball and poke it past WMU goalkeeper Jessica Laning for the 1-0 lead.
Ball State's pressure led to its second goal just under four minutes later as the Cardinals' hard-work was rewarded with a corner kick. Martin lofted the kick into the box where senior midfielder Vandi Ogden deflected the ball past a WMU defender. Senior Amy Holst corralled the deflection and blasted a shot into the back of the net for the two-goal lead.
BSU goalkeeper Rachael Murphy kept the Broncos off of the scoreboard just before half with a stellar save. Ashleigh Carpenter fired a shot in the 44th minute that Murphy was able to get her hands on to preserve BSU's two-goal cushion.
Rein and the Cardinals picked up an insurance goal in the 56th minute. Midfielder Annie Aiello started the play as she drove a ball into the box. Rein worked herself into perfect position and blasted the ball into the net off of a header for the 3-0 Ball State lead.
The two goals by Rein move her season total to seven on the year, which is second-most on the team. Holst's goal was her team-leading and conference leading ninth tally of the year after entering her senior season with only 12 career goals.
Murphy finished the afternoon with seven saves as she notches her seventh save of the season. Murphy and the Cardinals have posted four straight shutouts in MAC action.
