Field Hockey Loses Overtime Heartbreaker Against Miami
October 22, 2006 | Field Hockey
The Ball State field hockey team battled Miami to a scoreless tie through the end of regulation Sunday, but the RedHawks found the cage in the fourth minute of overtime to escape Muncie with a 1-0 victory.
Miami's Danielle Perrecone got a look at the goal in overtime and fired a shot that deflected off a Ball State stick and crept into the left side of the cage at the 73:15 mark.
It was the 16th shot on goal of the day for the RedHawks and the only one Ball State goalkeeper Caroline Lehman wasn't able to turn away. Lehman stopped nine shots in the first half and six more in the second to keep the Cardinals in the game.
Both teams battled through cold, windy conditions at BSU Turf Field.
Miami had the upper hand in most offensive categories. The RedHawks fired 20 shots to five for Ball State, and Miami earned 11 penalty corners to Ball State's three.
Lindsay Quay led Ball State with three shots and had the Cardinals' only shot on goal of the day.
With the loss, Ball State falls to 6-11 (5-4 MAC). Miami earned revenge for a Ball State win in Oxford last week to improve to 8-11 (5-4 MAC).
Ball State will travel to Missouri State for an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday, the final game of the regular season.
